What is a Start a Conversation Champion?

The Start a Conversation (SAC) Champion programme trains and supports individuals who would like to take action to help support the mental health and wellbeing of others.

With our training and support, Start a Conversation Champions will use their voice and networks to promote positive conversations about mental health and suicide in their community. They will be a source of information, provide mental health and wellbeing signposting support and be passionate about advocating mental health and wellbeing in the community.

Start a Conversation Champions are not expected to act as counsellors or share their own experiences if they are not comfortable doing so. Champions are focused on changing attitudes. They create opportunities to start a conversation about mental health, dispel myths, and make it easier for people to seek support.

What training will a Champion do?

You will be asked to complete the short Start a Conversation suicide prevention eLearning. You will also have the option to attend virtual Mental Health First Aid aware training, which is free of charge for Start a Conversation Champions.

Who can become a Champion?

Anyone who lives or works in Leicester, Leicestershire or Rutland and is aged 16 or above.

What is the time commitment?

We want the Champion opportunity to work for you, so there is no set time commitment. We do ask that you attend the quarterly Champion meetings, or at least give us an update on what you've been up to.

Whether you simply distribute Start a Conversation resources and encourage others to start a conversation about their mental health and wellbeing, or use your status to organise mental health and wellbeing events/activities within your community – no action is too small!
